Most of you know I was born in England and had lived in Europe and the Middle East prior to coming to the US. My accent was…. well, unusual. Leaning more towards the British sound but definitely, not “American”. The teasing was relentless. European fashion, was one thing. But add my “funny” accent and the fact that I had buck teeth and well…………”nuff said”. I bent to peer pressure, to the desire to fit in. I bent, I bent like a willow tree. I had a goal, I wanted to speak “American. I practiced every day and evening after school. Whenever I could, and wherever I could, until there was very little of my accent left. Looking back I wish I would have just stayed who I was. But it was tough, it was really tough. I had been a victim of some horrific bullying ( another post perhaps) and I wasn’t ready to experience the American version of it.
My accent has long gone. Although my husband and family say they still hear it now and then and especially when I’m around family ( all British accents). Overall I think I have mastered the American sound. But, there are some words I just couldn’t “Americanize” like tomato, strawberries, and a few others. They remain part of me.
My favorite accents are French, Italian, Australian and of course British.
Do you have an accent? Do you have a favorite?
